Brave Roses Fall Short in County Cup Semi-Final Battle

Chad Brindley19 Jan - 21:13

Heart, Determination, and Teamwork Shine Against Tough Opposition

This morning, the Roses faced a tough challenge in the County Cup semi-final against Leicester City Ladies, a team two divisions higher. Despite the odds, we had a game plan and a full squad ready to give it everything.

Knowing we’d spend much of the game defending, we opted to sit deep in numbers and aim to exploit Leicester’s defence with pace out wide and upfront.

The match began as expected, with Leicester dominating possession in our half. However, the Roses dug in, with Lenna, Lilia, and Tilly forming a solid shield in front of the goal. Out wide, Kayleigh and Esme worked tirelessly to contain Leicester’s wide players.

Leicester’s quality showed as they scored three quick goals, all well-taken. Unfortunately, our defence struggled as illness hit Lenna, Lilia, and Tilly today and recently, and Katie, also returning today from an ankle fracture, had to leave the pitch in pain. Before these goals, Poppy came close to breaking the deadlock after some excellent midfield play. Sophie’s pass, following Lily’s determined ball recovery, sent Poppy through on goal, but her shot found the side netting.

Leicester had the chance to make it 4-0 when Lyla was penalised for what looked like a clean tackle in the box. However, Lyla stayed tall, tipping the penalty onto the bar to keep the score at 3-0.

Looking to spark a comeback, Ellie moved upfront alongside Poppy, with Caris and Kiri introduced on the wings. Caris made a good impact with clever footwork and well-placed balls down the line, while Kiri linked up effectively with the forwards. The breakthrough came before halftime: Ellie held off her marker, and the ball fell to Poppy, who slotted it home brilliantly.

At the break, the Roses faced a tough situation. Three substitutes were struggling with illness and injury. Sophie returned to partner Hallie in midfield, giving Lily a well-earned rest after a strong first half. Poppy swapped with Chloe to recharge after her tireless running.

In the second half, Leicester continued to press, but the Roses created a few chances. Chloe, back on after halftime, chased every loose ball and came close to reducing the deficit, only for Leicester’s defence to make crucial last-ditch interventions. Just as it seemed the game could turn with a Roses goal, Leicester powered forward to make it 4-1.

As the match wore on and fatigue set in, Leicester added two more goals to finish 6-1 winners. Without Lyla’s superb handling and composure in goal, the scoreline could have been higher. Despite numerous forced defensive changes, the team adapted and fought hard until the final whistle.

Although the Roses didn’t reach the final, their effort, determination, and team spirit were remarkable. Coaches Chad and Rob were immensely proud of every player’s performance. The girls left everything on the pitch and battled against a strong side. Today, every single player was a Player of the Match for their grit, resilience and for just being a brilliant team!
